Hi John, I wouldn’t say you would have to declare your camera at customs, no. They only really care about drones. Your DSLR camera will be absolutely fine! Sophie x

I was free to use my DSLR to take photos of any temple, the Egyptian Museum and any of the tombs in Valley of the Kings and Queens without being asked. The people at the ticket counter told me this and would not sell me a photo pass. I also confirmed with a tomb guard that the photo pass was removed a few months ago and he’s relieved that he doesn’t need to repeat “NO PHOTO” a million times a day.

I was last there in 2012 and took a small point and shoot camera and had no issues passing through customs. This time however I want to take my Nikon Z5 digital camera with a 24-70mm and a 16-35mm lens. They will be carried as hand luggage and I will have some very basic accessories such as lens cleaner, wipes and lens covers. Will I have to get a permit to pass through Customs or will I be forced to pay a fee just to clear customs. Do I have to declare my digital camera.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Avisekh, I’m sorry you found this issue. I went in with my DSLR and found no such issue. It could have been a bit of a scam, unfortunately. Did you go in with a guide? Usually, they will stop that sort of thing from happening. Unfortunately, Egypt is one of the countries where they scam tourists a lot. Sophie x

Just one latest information. I was stopped from entering the Giza Pyramid complex with my DALR stating that it is a professional equipment and requires special permission. I went with a R5 and 24 70. Not something outrageous! But the god (security guard) in front of the gate seems didn’t like it and suspected that I am Stephane Spielberg and intending to make a movie on Pyramid without permission. Very disappointing and I would have not come to Egypt if I knew about all these issues. In my last visit in 2010; things were way different. But everything changed now. Doesn’t feel like the same place anymore. So if you are serious about photography; I would recommend to skip the archeological sites of Egypt.
