Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg Walk – The Ultimate Guide

During my travels in Switzerland, I went on some lovely walks. Actually, they were better than lovely, they were spectacular!

As you’re strolling with the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, with mountains, waterfalls and wildlife all around, you really feel one with nature.

Another great thing was that there were hardly any people on the paths meaning you had the place to yourself to immerse yourself in your surroundings.

One of the treks which I really rate is the journey from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk.

Every time that I visit Switzerland I make sure I put this on my list as it is simply exquisite.

It’s downhill, requires little effort and you will get the most gorgeous scenery that Switzerland has to offer you.

Here’s my complete guide to the männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk in Switzerland.

What are ‘Wegs’ in Switzerland?

For those of you who haven’t been here before, there are three types of walks you can go on in Switzerland.

These are called Wegs;

  • Wanderweg (blue): an easy walk that requires minimal effort Panoramaweg: a panoramic walk with outstanding scenery
  • Bergweg (red): for mountain or hilly walks which require a fair bit of effort and should be taken with caution.

These are all signposted and colour coded so that you can manage your expectations on what sort of walk to expect.

The Wanderweg is blue, whereas the Bergweg is red with a warning.

You will see the colour codes on yellow walking signs or sometimes painted on rocks.

Luckily the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk is a Wanderweg / Panoramaweg. So, nice and easy.

Getting to Männlichen in Switzerland

Männlichen is located around 2,343 metres above mean sea level and so the only way to access this easily is by Cable Car.

There are two main stations located in Wengen and Grindelwald.

From Wengen: it will take around 5 minutes to reach Männlichen and the cable cars run every 20 minutes.

From Grindelwald: it will take about 45 and are on a continuous loop. So, I would recommend starting you’re Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk in Wengen.

Taking in the beautiful views in Männlichen

On my most recent visit from Männlichen to kleine scheidegg, they revamped the cable car station and labelled the walk up to the viewpoint ‘the Royal walk’.

You can be queen for the day, they even have crowns to wear, as you make your way to the crown on top of the hill.

Yeah, yeah it’s for kids but you’re never too old right?!

What to expect on the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg walk

Although the walk is short in distance, it is not to be reckoned with.

It seems easy at first as you make your way up the gravel path but as you get closer and closer to the viewpoint you will feel the path get steeper and steeper!

I have to admit, I was a little breathless when I got to the top. Okay, I was really breathless.

But luckily, there were benches and distractions to keep you occupied on your way up to take your mind away from your legs.

The viewpoint

When I finally got to the end, I was greeted with a fantastic golden crown perched on the hill.

I was proud to make it up there after I caught my breath.

The views were on another level of amazing.

You could see the mountains, the little Swiss villages in the valley, and the scenery for miles around you! I was in my element.

Heading back down

Now…as much as the view was lovely, it couldn’t distract me enough that had to venture back to the cable car station.

I always feel that your muscles work harder going down and so as I was hobbling back down the path, I had to be careful not to slip over.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case and I met some furry friends on my return.

How long is the walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg?

From here, you can make you’re Männlichen to Kleine Sheidegg walk.

The walk takes around an hour and a half but if you’re like me and enjoy taking your time and tonnes of photos I would allow around two hours.

The path is gravelly, windy and has running waterfalls over the path sometimes, but it is beautiful!

You can walk, explore sit and take in the views or bring a picnic with you and have one of the best dining views in Switzerland.

You can really take it at your leisure.

The Treehouse in Kleine Scheidegg

As you’re making your, rather steep, way down don’t forget to walk up to the famous Kleine Sheidegg treehouse which is located in one of the cafes close to the end.

You get some awesome views of Kleine Scheidegg, with their crazy Tipi bar and the trains which come and go from the stations and Jungfraujoch.

What to do in Kleine Scheidegg

After your walk, you’re probably in need of a sit-down! Kleine Sheidegg, or ‘Kleiney’ as I like to call it, is a pretty little place.

There isn’t much here as it is a stopover station in the mountains for those travelling up to the Jungfraujoch but they do know how to party.

They have a drinking Tipi tent which you can use at your disposal and a Café to sit and have a drink.

As it was a chilly day, I decided to try their Gluewein (even though it was August), it was scrummy!

Where to visit after Kleine Scheidegg

After you’ve made your way back to Kleine Scheidegg you have a wealth of attractions in your reach.

You can go to Wengen and explore or do some shopping. Visit Lauterbrunnen at the bottom of the valley and see the famous Staubach falls.

Or visit Mürren – my favourite place in all of Switzerland!

You must experience the Royal walk for yourself if you are planning a holiday in Switzerland, you definitely won’t regret it!
