Why You MUST Visit Switzerland’s Schilthorn Piz Gloria – James Bond Film Location!

It’s my fifth visit to Switzerland now, my first being around a decade ago, and I don’t know how they manage to keep everything nearly exactly the same and still make it better every time I visit.

My favourite area of the country is Berner Oberland in the Jungfrau Region.

It has a crown of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains overlooking the green hilly valley and at the bottom the crystal clear Brienz and Thun lakes. It is absolutely stunning.

I based myself in Mürren, a mountain top village, which is a cable car and train ride up from Lauterbrunnen.

These two places are gems to visit within themselves but one of the main reasons tourists flock here is to catch a ride up to the Schilthorn Piz Gloria.

Standing at 2970m above sea level, you need to get two cable cars up to the top!

The Mountain views

When you reach the top of the second cable car, you make your way up to the viewpoint.

On a clear day, you can see snow-capped mountain peaks all around you and look out for miles.

If you’re feeling brave, you can climb beyond the viewpoint and around the area to get a closer look at the peninsular.

You can even walk all the way down (or up) the mountain but, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

James Bond – 007

Although the views are the main attraction, it is also famed for being a James Bond movie set.

On Her Majesties, Secret Service, starring George Lazenby was shot here in 1969.

The crew spent 6 months filming at the Schilthorn and George lived in Mürren down below between playing a secret agent.

The whole place is mad on the Bond thing and everywhere you look you can see the 007 logos.

The floor, your coffee cup and saucer, the windows, the wifi name, the gift shop, and even the toilets had ‘bond’ and ‘bond girls’.

Apparently, in the gents, it said ‘shake, don’t stir’ but don’t take my word for it!

Piz Gloria

If you’ve finished having a look around this amazing viewpoint you can relax in the Schilthorn’s 360-degree revolving restaurant called Piz Gloria.

Serving a range of meals and hot and cold drinks throughout the day, the restaurant spins slowly giving you a panorama view of the mountain tops.

You can indulge in a James Bond champagne breakfast or enjoy a  traditional swiss brunch.

I received a complimentary French Martini with my ticket and so took full advantage even though it was around 9 am when I drank it – hic!

The altitude made it go to my legs instantly, which made for a fun ride back down the cable car.

It definitely added to the 007 experience though and looked almost identical to Bond’s Vespa Martini. Strictly served Shaken, not stirred!

It was like an oasis for James Bond fans! There's also like a 'behind the scenes' documentary where George and the film crew lived in Murren for the filming. It was awesome - you need to visit :) Thanks for reading. Sophie x
